Frequently asked questions

Is this sole trader invoice template free?

Yes, completely free. You can create and download professional PDF invoices without signing up or providing any payment details.

Do sole traders legally need to issue invoices?

If you're VAT-registered, yes — you're legally required to issue VAT invoices. Even if you're not VAT-registered, invoices are strongly recommended: they act as proof of income for Self Assessment and help you track what you're owed.

What should a sole trader invoice include?

Your name and address, your client's name and address, a unique invoice number, the date, a description of work done, the amount due, and your payment terms. If you're VAT-registered, also include your VAT number and the VAT amount charged.

Does it support UK VAT?

Yes. Billdrop supports all standard UK VAT rates: 20% standard rate, 5% reduced rate, and 0% zero-rated. You can also add your VAT registration number. If you're near the VAT threshold (£90,000 turnover), it's worth checking whether you need to register.

Can I use this for Self Assessment?

Billdrop is an invoicing tool, not an accounting or tax product. However, keeping clean invoice records makes Self Assessment much easier — you can see all your income by date and client. We recommend exporting your invoice history each tax year.

Can I invoice in GBP and other currencies?

Yes. GBP is the default for UK sole traders. If you work with international clients you can also invoice in USD, EUR, CAD, and AUD.
